It’s the penultimate Monday night game of the season when Atlanta visits NFC South rival Tampa Bay. The Falcons know that if they win out, they will repeat as NFC South champions. But one loss could keep the Falcons out of the playoffs altogether. The Falcons are solid NFL betting favorites over Tampa Bay. Let’s see if it will be enough to cover the NFL spread.

Last Meeting

Atlanta was a 10.5-point favorite in Week 12 and beat Tampa Bay 34-20. Tampa Bay rallied from 21 points down to get to 27-20, and had the football inside Atlanta’s red zone before a failed fourth-down attempt. The Falcons took the ensuing possession back in the other direction for a final touchdown and a slightly misleading 34-20 final. The main reason the Buccaneers did not get that win in Atlanta was wide receiver Julio Jones, who went crazy with 12 receptions for 253 yards and two touchdowns. Jones had just one catch for nine yards on three targets in the first quarter. The Bucs were without starting QB Jameis Winston then.

Why Bet on Atlanta?

The Falcons could win the NFC South, be a wild-card team or miss the playoffs altogether. They got a huge win last Thursday over New Orleans, 20-17. Deion Jones made a leaping interception in the end zone with 1:25 remaining. Matt Ryan shook off three interceptions to guide the Falcons to Matt Bryant’s 52-yard field goal with 3:49 to go, snapping a 17-all tie. Ryan had tied the game with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Mohamed Sanu with 9:55 remaining, finishing 15 of 27 for 221 yards.

Since 2014, the Bucs are just 1-5 in night games. The Bucs are also pretty bad in December. In their past 20 games played in the month of December, the Bucs have gone just 4-16 straight-up. Overall, Tampa is 3-9-1 ATS this season, which is tied for the second worst mark in the NFL. The Falcons are 5-1 in their past six primetime games. Atlanta is 6-3 ATS in divisional games since the beginning of last season, which is one of the best marks in the NFL in the span.

The status of running back Tevin Coleman is still in doubt as he remains in the concussion protocol. He sustained the concussion in last Thursday night’s win over New Orleans. And the Monday night matchup with Tampa Bay gives Coleman a little more time than normal to recover. But every Falcons player who has sustained a concussion this season has missed a least one game. If Coleman is out, that means a heavier workload for Devonta Freeman in his third game back from a concussion.  Coleman’s been a significant asset to Atlanta’s offense this season recording 838 yards of total offense and seven touchdowns.

Adrian Clayborn, the team’s sack leader, missed some practice this week due to a hamstring injury. Sanu, the team leader in TD receptions, has been limited by knee injury. But both should play. In addition, both starting guards are banged up, with Andy Levitre unlikely to play. Ben Garland will continue to fill in at left guard.

Why Bet on Tampa Bay?

The Bucs have dropped three straight but could have won the past two. Tight end O.J. Howard, the Buccaneers’ first-round pick, has picked up his pace in the second half of the season as he continues to learn more about the pro game every week. In his first nine games, Howard caught 14 passes for 227 yards and three touchdowns. In Tampa Bay’s last four contests, he has added 11 catches for 175 yards and two more scores. Only eight NFL tight ends have more receiving yards than Howard in the last four weeks, and only three have more touchdowns.

In their last six games, the Falcons have played four teams that either are or recently were among the projected playoff field in the NFC. Now, with a game against the 4-9 Bucs standing between Atlanta and a two-game stretch against the Saints and Panthers, this could be a trap game. Tampa’s roster is still comprised of NFL players who are as talented as any in the league.

Are the Bucs a safe bet in Week 15?

Five-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Gerald McCoy left last week’s game because of a right biceps injury and did not return. He also underwent an MRI on Monday, but the team has been mum on his status. The defensive line has accounted for 15 sacks this year, the fewest in the NFL, and five of them have come from McCoy. To make matters worse, their backup Clinton McDonald, has been out because of a back injury. The Falcons are preparing for Robert Ayers to fill McCoy’s position.

In addition to McCoy, the Buccaneers’ most impactful defender this season has been linebacker Lavonte David, who leads the team in tackles and has five forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries. David has missed practice this week due to a hamstring injury. But the secondary could be fortified. Safety T.J. Ward, who has been in the NFL’s concussion protocol since suffering the injury in the first 12 game against Atlanta, will play. Cornerback Vernon Hargreaves and safety Josh Robinson are trying to return from hamstring injuries that have kept them out for four and two games,

Christmas arrived early in the Netherlands — late, actually (the Dutch celebrate on December 5) — with the results of the fourth annual Good Country Index. Former policy advisor Simon Anholt’s in-depth analysis examined each country’s contributions to the world, across broad categories such as ‘Health & Wellbeing,’ ‘World Order’ and ‘Planet & Climate.’ The ratings in each are aggregated and then, voila, countries are ranked in order of goodness.

And according to the Index, no country was more gooder in 2017 than the Netherlands, where there are more bikes than people. Take notes, rest of the world. “Hartelijk gefeliciteerd” on a job well done, Netherlands. Congratulations!

In addition to its No. 2 ranking for ‘Culture’ and No. 4 ranking for ‘Prosperity & Equality,’ the Netherlands landed No. 8 for its global contributions to science and technology. The U.S., by comparison, was No. 38 in this department. Pretty impressive for a country with only half the population of California.

Netherlands’ primary exports — natural gas, machinery, engineering equipment — reflect old-world business and the pre-tech economy. But the country is quickly becoming a force in the business-to-business (B2B) software realm, as exemplified by the Netherlands-based technology platforms beloved by reviewers on G2 Crowd. Digital times can coexist with the industrial side of things, and the Netherlands in 2017 is a shining example of how.

A majority of Dutch software vendors are hunkered down in Amsterdam, the capital and most multicultural city in the world. It’s an undeniable hotbed for startups thanks to its quality of life, affordability, beautiful scenery and ultra-progressive policies — visit any of the famous “coffee shops” to get a taste of just how progressive. Unicorns Netflix and Uber established their EU headquarters in Amsterdam, and the city was dubbed the European Capital of Innovation in 2016 by the European Commission. In 2014 alone, 75 different Dutch startups raised venture funding, including $200 million for payment platform Adyen.

That’ll buy a lot of stroopwafel!

Time will tell if the Netherlands becomes cramped and overpriced like the other tech meccas. For now, though, it’s still somehow maintaining its affordability while simultaneously becoming the world’s “high-tech startup capital,” according to TechCrunch. The country’s population has hovered around the 17 million mark for the last decade without oppressive growth. It’s worth noting that 90 percent (and change) of the population live in urban areas, fueling the furnace of innovation that’s been making worldwide headlines and cementing the country’s status as a positive contributor.

The most positive, for that matter, if judging by this past year alone.

It’s a long-in-the-making paradigm shift from the way humans go to work … a revolt against the morning commute and office politics. Toss in the rising robot workforce and related uncertainties — and who can blame them?

In 2016, freelancers comprised a remarkable 35 percent of the U.S. workforce, and 47 percent of 18-24-year-olds freelanced full-time or part-time. Crazier still: More than half of freelancers who quit a full-time job wound up earning more within a year, while working fewer hours on average.

Maybe not so crazy: 79 percent said freelancing is better than an “old-fashioned” job. It’s possible that a few just want to portray zero regrets — or maybe try to convince themselves they’re on the right path — but it’s safe to assume that many are full-speed ahead down Freelance Lane, grins wide and no looking back.

Perhaps one sacrifice of the freelancing life is less access to the powerful (and supes expensive) software freelancers may have grown accustomed to an enterprise paying for. A healthy corporation can provide a toy box of sorts for developers, writers, editors, translators and marketers — the five primary freelancing professions, according to a 2012 report — to use in their craft. Riding solo forces independent contractors to be a bit more resourceful and maximize their efficiency with fewer applications.

But certain software tools, and not to mention a reliable computer, are necessary investments. One app that mustn’t be spared in a freelancing career is a tool for recording and budgeting labor hours (and for that matter, minutes and seconds). With proper time tracking, freelancers can work with confidence knowing they’ll receive the appropriate credit and compensation for their output. Time tracking software can benefit these individuals in a number of other ways; after getting comfortable with the right one, a freelancer might wonder how they ever lived without it.

The most obvious perk of time tracking is for invoicing employers the correct amount without scrambling to estimate hours after the fact, and potentially being way off. Receiving fair and accurate pay is a no-brainer outcome here. But time tracking freelancers are also a more confident investment for the companies that employ them which is a foundation for repeated business, referrals and a positive reputation among peers.

Austin L. Church, an established independent consultant to both executives and entrepreneurs, puts it well in a blog post featured on his website.

Are you billing your time in one amorphous lump like a professional employee? Or are you billing your time in task-specific fifteen-minute increments like a professional freelancer?”

Later in the post, Church discusses another major benefit of successful time tracking: Maximizing billable time. What’s likely thousands upon thousands of freelancers let bits of work fall through the cracks of billability — things like responding to emails, client phone calls, and minor updates or edits to work. Even the smallest work-related tasks are still “on the clock” moments that can add up come payday.

Church estimates that proper time tracking of these admin and project management tasks can increase a freelancer’s net income by 15-25 percent. Even if cash doesn’t rule everything thing around you, it’s still your money to get and there’s no guilt to be had in the process. Time tracking freelancers get the money. Dollar dollar bill, ya’ll.

An unfortunate side effect of the freelancing revolution is those sneaks who take advantage of employers by “padding their numbers” on invoices, giving a bad name to their colleagues in the process. For pure time-based contracts, as opposed to project-based, the “honor system” is in play in most situations. This can naturally result in a lingering suspicion from employers that freelancers might bend the truth to get more money — and their suspicions are occasionally validated by the dishonest delinquents of the freelancing world.

December 14, 2017 (StlRealEstate.News) — As rents across the country rise, many working adults are doubling up with roommates or parents in order to cut costs and share living expenses

– Across the country, 30 percent of adults live with either a roommate or parent, up eight percentage points since 2000.

– Los Angeles, Riverside, Calif. and Miami have the greatest share of adults living with a roommate or parent. These metros also have some of the nation’s most expensive rents.

– Americans making the national median income should expect to spend about 30 percent of their monthly income on a rental payment, but in Los Angeles, renters spend almost half.

Nationally, nearly one in three adults live with a roommate or parent, the greatest share ever reportedi, according to a new Zillow® analysisii. As rental affordability deteriorates, more U.S. adults may be choosing double up in order to cut costs.

 A doubled-up household is where two or more working-agediii adults live together but aren’t married or in a relationship — this could mean two millennial roommates or an adult living with parents. The share of doubled-up households has been steadily rising since the late 1990s, when just 23 percent of adults lived together.

The rise in doubled-up households coincides with increasingly unaffordable rental prices nationwide. Americans making the national median income should expect to put about 30 percent of their monthly income toward a rental payment, but in some markets the share is even greater. In Los Angeles, renters spend almost half of their monthly income on rent. In San Francisco, renters spend 42 percent of their income on rent each month.

“As rents have outpaced incomes, living alone is no longer an option for many working-aged adults,” said Zillow senior economist Aaron Terrazas. “By sharing a home with roommates — or in some cases, with adult parents — working adults are able to afford to live in more desirable neighborhoods without shouldering the full cost alone. But this phenomenon is not limited to expensive cities. The share of adults living with roommates has been on the rise in historically more affordable rental markets as well. Unless current dynamics shift and income growth exceeds rent growth for a sustained period of time, this trend is unlikely to change.”

Metros with the greatest share of adults doubling up also have some of the most expensive rents. In Los Angeles, almost 50 percent of adults live with a roommate or adult parent, the highest share of all markets analyzed. Los Angeles is the third most expensive rental market in the nationiv, with the median rent at $2,720 per monthv.

Riverside, Calif. and Miami metros also have a high percentage of doubled-up households. In Riverside, almost 45 percent of adults are doubled up, along with 41 percent in Miami. Both metros are among the seven most expensive rental markets when ranked by the share of income going toward the typical rent payment.

When renters decide to move to a new place, a recent rent increase was likely the catalyst, according to the 2017 Zillow Group Consumer Housing Trends Reportvi. Almost 80 percent of renters who moved from a previous rental experienced a rent increase before moving. And when renters start searching for a new place to live, 77 percent indicate that the rental being within their price range is a top requirement.

Why Bet on New England?

The New England Patriots are going to be angry after playing horribly Monday night in a 27-20 loss in Miami to end the team’s eight-game winning streak. Brady was intercepted twice by Xavien Howard and held without a third-down conversion.  Brady went 24 for 43 for 233 yards and one touchdown. Miami sacked him twice and hit him five times, and held the Patriots to 25 yards rushing. New England was 0 for 11 on third down. The Pats were without Gronkowski as he served a one-game suspension.

The team also signed WR Kenny Britt this week. Britt, who played nine games with the Browns this season, gives the Patriots a much bigger receiving target at 6-foot-3 and 223 pounds. Britt is a bigger target who offers a contrast to the top three players on the Patriots’ wide receiver depth chart: Brandin Cooks (5-foot-10, 189 pounds), Hogan (6-foot-1, 210) and Danny Amendola (5-foot-11, 190).

Since the beginning of the Brady and Bill Belichick era, the Patriots have played the Steelers a total of 12 times, including the playoffs, and gone 10-2 against them. In the past four meetings between these two teams, the Patriots have gone 4-0 straight-up and 3-0-1 ATS.

The Patriots will clinch the AFC East for the ninth consecutive season with a win at Pittsburgh or a Buffalo loss earlier in the day. It would be the 17th division title since Robert Kraft purchased the Patriots in 1994. The Patriots have the most division titles of any team since the 1994 season with 16. New England can lock up a playoff spot with a Baltimore loss.

In his 12 starts against the Steelers, Brady has a 115.1 passer rating with 29 touchdown passes and three interceptions. In his past seven games vs. Pittsburgh, Brady has 22 touchdowns, zero interceptions and six wins.

The Patriots are 7-10 all-time in the regular season in games played in Pittsburgh, but they are 3-2 all-time in the regular season at Heinz Field since it opened in 2001.

Why Bet on Pittsburgh?

Since Big Ben’s rookie year in 2004, the Steelers have only been a home underdog a total of 12 times. Not only are the Steelers 8-3-1 against the spread (ATS), but they also have a strong track record of pulling off the upset, going 8-4 SU. Of the 12 games the Steelers have played as a home dog in the Roethlisberger era, three of them have come against the Patriots. Pittsburgh is 2-1 when they play New England as a home underdog.

The Steelers have clinched the AFC North and have won eight consecutive games, including last week’s 39-38 comeback win against Baltimore. Roethlisberger passed for 506 yards and is the only player in NFL history to have three games with at least 500 passing yards. The Steelers will clinch a first-round bye with a win and Pittsburgh will also secure the AFC’s No. 1 seed with a win combined with a Jacksonville loss.

Are the Steelers a safe bet in Week 15?

Le’Veon Bell leads the NFL in rushing yards (1,105) and scrimmage yards (1,684) while wide receiver Antonio Brown ranks first in receptions (99) and receiving yards (1,509). Brown needs one reception to become the first player in NFL history to have at least 100 receptions in five consecutive seasons.

He has 9,886 receiving yards in his eight-year NFL career. Brown, who will play in his 115th career game on Sunday, can tie Calvin Johnson (115) for the fewest games to reach 10,000 receiving yards in NFL history. Brown also can become the first player in NFL history with at least 1,600 receiving yards and 10 touchdown catches in three different seasons.

The Steelers also get back rookie WR JuJu Smith-Schuster this week. He was suspended for the Ravens game. He’s the team’s second-leading receiver with 585 yards.

Switzerland’s startup scene is vibrant, exciting and expansive. However, where Switzerland excels is in scientific, technological research. Whether the research is in space, physics or earth sciences, the legacy of the place is staggering. (CERN, I’m talking about CERN.) In fact, the Swiss federal government itself supports the Swiss National Science Foundation, a private research funding organization that prides itself on the highest quality of research.

Switzerland ranks second (SECOND!) in The Global Entrepreneurship and Development Institute’s “Global Entrepreneurship Index.” This Index measures 137 countries on the health of their entrepreneurship ecosystems. You know what other countries are in the top five? The U.S. (No. 1), Canada (No. 3), the United Kingdom (No. 4) and Australia (No. 5).

This makes sense, considering that in 2016 Switzerland has, as a direct answer to San Francisco’s Silicon Valley, rolled out a network of technology parks. Reason Numero Uno: SOUTHERN RAILWAY SUCKS!

As I said on my Facebook : if Hell had a rail network, it would be Southern Railway. Don’t even bother about the Highway, AC/DC was telling lies.

This is what I have been faced with every single day for the last 3 months :

 


Due to Southern Railway’s complete incompetency and inability to run their network, I have had to travel 4 hours + to get to and back from work 4 out out of 5 working days…Why?

Typical Southern Rail excuses : A leaf has made its way onto the tracks [Sept to Nov]; the tracks are wet because it has rained [Nov to June] ; the tracks are too hot [June to Sept];  a ghost train is missing its driver [on loan at the local ghost ride’s funfair] …  All this has been leaving my boss thinking I was cocking up my arrival to work on purpose everyday and making it up. UGH. Southern, Bellend Express.
